Who is Opal Minded's Founder and Opal Hunter?

An acknowledged opal visionary, John Bernard is relentless in his pursuit to achieve strict regulation of the Australian opal industry. His strong belief in sustainable mining, masterful opal cutting and polishing, and non-negotiable opal treatment disclosure is reflected in both his mining and business practices.

Opals and opal mining run in his blood. The son of an opal explorer father and a master opal cutter mother, John grew up in a family that amassed what once was the largest opal collection in the world. Hands-on and passionate, John spends much of his time working in the company’s Jundah-Opalville mines.

John’s area of expertise:

  • Opal mining process – new technologies being used and the future of opal mining
  • Traditional opal cutting techniques
  • Opal Minded commitment to ethics and sustainability

Who is Opal Minded’s Creative?

Creative Director, Dr Renata Bernard, fell for Australian opals soon after falling in love with Opal Minded’s founder, John Bernard. Passionate about films, she was awarded a PhD in cinema before leaving academia to embrace the world of opals and jewellery design. She then successfully transitioned into being an award-winning designer and accredited NJCV valuer and gemmologist for Opal Minded.

Renata is responsible for all Opal Minded’s creations being their distinguished in-house designer. Meticulous by nature and a perfectionist, Renata has been known to remake the same hand-crafted ring multiple times to achieve the final perfect one-of-a-kind piece.

Renata’s area of expertise:

  • Transparency of Opal Minded’s opal jewellery-making process including provenance and manufacture
  • Explaining what is a quality opal and quality jewellery design and craftmanship
